Every hundred years, Count Dracula's Castle casts a sinister shadow over Europe as the bloodthirsty vampire returns from the dead. Since the time of the Crusades, a member of the Belmont clan has taken up the legendary whip Vampire Killer to defeat the ruler of darkness. In A.D. 1476, Trevor Belmont overthrows Dracula with the help of the vampire's own son, a dhampir named Alucard, once more restoring peace to the world. Feeling guilty for committing patricide, Alucard resigns himself to sleeping in a coffin for over three hundred years.

In the year A.D. 1797, the return of Dracula's Castle stirs Alucard from his slumber only for him to find that no Belmont has appeared to challenge the ancient vampire's reign. Once more faced with the task of defeating his own father, Alucard soon discovers that the current Belmont, Richter, has become a brainwashed servant of the dark priest, Shaft, in a scheme to fully resurrect Dracula. Armed with his mother's family sword and his father's dark magic, Alucard embarks on a journey through the endless castle to face countless undead monsters, free Richter from Shaft's control, relive his mother's execution, and ultimately confront his father's vendetta against humanity.
